Small Park, Higsi
Thu Dec 15, 1941

This is more of a makeshift baseball diamond with swings and a picnic area than an actual park. There is a fence behind what was homeplate, and on the other side a small set of bleachers, but no real dugouts or anything. Certainly no school games were played here, but possibly the children in town come here to play.

Weather:
It is fall. The weather is cool and fair.

The small town park is more like where children probably pick up a game of baseball or men relive their glory days while drinking beer. There are swings. Glorious swings. This is where Elizabeth is. A picnic basket sits on the table nearby as she swings. The smell of fried chicken wafts from that basket.

A small side bag with him, which probably has books and notes, Randy comes stepping into the park. Heading for the bleachers before spotting Elizabeth, slowly making his way toward her. "Hello. Apologies for having to run out on you last time." He offers with a small bow of his head.

<FS3> Lillie rolls Empath+Mind: Good Success.

Ms. O'Clery is out having a drink. No, not /really/; she's not getting gooned, she's 'drinking in' the situation. People-watching; more like 'feeling'. She can never really escape it, she can simply go to a quieter place and pick and choose perceptions. Crowded places, save for where she works, aren't her thing.

This is what Lillie prefers, having a look around this park and the baseball diamond. The sight of it fills the girl with a sort of well being, as a memory or two flits to and fro in her mind. She's just about to continue on until she scents something on the wind! It's fried chicken!! Jolted from her reverie, the girl pads off in the direction of the smell, of perhaps the sound of chains rattling as a swing is kicked. Lillie may be seen approaching in a minute or two, and her small hand lifts in greeting should either Randy or Elizabeth spot her first.

Elizabeth swings a bit more, but it becomes instantly more modest when Randy shows up. It would not do to have her skirts over her head. There is a slowing of the swing as she looks at the man. "I figured I just bored you with the lack of knowledge in legends and folklore." Her lashes drop coyly before coming back up to study him. "I have food if you are hungry." This brings her attention to Lillie too. Her hand comes up to wave the woman over. "Miss O'Clery, have you met Mister Preston?" Her Boston accent still wrapping around her words when she speaks. She offers towards Randy. "Miss O'Clery works as a waitress at one of the diners." There is a pause as she's not really sure what Randy does.

Randy chuckles, "Not at all, miss Higgins." He assures her before turning to the newest arrival. "Pleasure to meet you miss O'Clery. Randall Preston. Randy is fine though." He offers with his own New York accent.

As she had discerned with Mr. Flynn, Lillie is able to pick out the indications of a Bostonian accent in Elizabeth's words. There's no missing it. To Lillie, this is a comfort; and yet another fascinating coincidence. How many folks came here from Boston? However, the lilt that comes from her own mouth in greeting is a… curious mixture. A singsong Irish lilt, it's deep earthiness strong enough to combat even that which came from 15 years of living in Boston. Mind you, there /are/ some hints… but that's neither here nor there.

"We've not met," Lillie admits, turning her gaze next to Randy as her head nods once. "Good afternoon, Mister Preston. Miss Higgins," She pauses, and smiles widely. "I hope the day finds you both well… I'm grateful for the kind offer, but I hope I'm not intruding?" She asks gently, before smiling slightly in pleasure. She doesn't get to hear a New York accent very often!

Elizabeth's face shows her uncertainty. It's not about the people though. It's how to get off the swing. Normally, she'd just jump on the upwards pump, but Randy is there. She starts to slow the swing as the chains cry out in protest. One hand comes out to hope that Randy will be a gentleman and help her off without her falling on her face at his feet. Unless he's into that. "You can call me Elizabeth. I'm afraid I don't quite remember what you do in town, Mister Preston."

Then there is the empathic beauty. The fact that Elizabeth wears her emotions so strong and so on the surface, must drive the woman crazy. There is a warm and sincere smile from the blonde. "No, you are never an intrusion, please call me Elizabeth though. We are a smaller town and I would rather we were more like family. Last names are for older people of respect."

Randy smiles and nods his head to Lillie. "Not intruding." He offers before noticing Elizabeth slowing down. Moving to help, not always being fully a gentleman but he does try to at least. "Ah, well. I just run around at the moment I suppose. I'm happy to help with any kind of job that need to." In other words, he doesn't really have a job here. Smiling between them both. Seeming honest with his own emotions as well, for the time being, being rather upfront. "Well, I do try to discover the hidden secrets." He adds.

How fascinating, this town. Lillie looks skyward for a moment, shyly; is it her place to outright ask Elizabeth about her roots and where she came from? She had done so with Monty, but he asked her that question first! A deeply curious nature accompanies her empathic nature, and the blonde was so kind to introduce her. It wouldn't hurt! Wide green eyes fix upon the other young lady as she begins to slow the swing down, and in that moment Lillie 'feels' the kindness in her words as she quells her worries about intruding. She basks in this inner warmth for a moment as Randy kindly helps the young lady down from the swing.

Taking the time now to listen to the young man's response on more levels than just listening alone, Lillie affixes her thoughtful gaze upon him next. There is a sort of.. clarity that she is feeling, here. Perhaps a hopeful sense? Lillie folds her hands in front of her waist, warding off the chilly air. "Welcome to Higsi, Randy." She offers earnestly, lips curling into another smile.

Elizabeth gives a grateful smile towards Randy. Her left hand finds his as she sort of 'hops' off the swing to come to her feet. A moment of catching her balance but she ends up right as rain. There is a larger smile as her hand slowly comes from the man. It's not snatched back, but it doesn't linger either. "I do have some food and some plates if you are both hungry. I sometimes feel I'm trying to feed the town and they are resisting my efforts." Her smile includes Lillie as she walks over towards the small picnic area. "I have…" Elizabeth opens the basket to see what she does have. Perhaps she's forgotten already. "Chicken, potato salad and cookies." Her eyes look up at the others and then a softer, almost embarrassed smile for her next words. "I also have a thermos of milk." Yeah, nothing adult in that drink.

"Thank you. Been here long?" Randy asks of Lillie. "Apologies miss O'Clery, don't think I caught your first name. If you don't mind." Turning to chuckle at Elizabeth's words. "I'm happy to join in. If you really do not mind." He says and follows along. Nodding about milk. "Ah, excellent."

Ah, the food! Honestly Lillie would have eventually heard the voices and meandered over, regardless of the amazing smells. But who is she to decline an offer so sweetly made? The Irish girl tilts her head as she observes the basket, eyes mirthful. "I would love to try some. How could I resist?" She sets a finger beneath her chin in a thoughtful gesture. "A little of each, yes.. will get me through the day. It smells so lovely." Lillie compliments, and finds her stomach snarling it's approval. When DID she get this hungry?! Alas, politely, she will let others tuck in first. "My name is Lucietta but please… Lillie works best."

"Elizabeth, I cannot help but notice.. your accent. See, I moved here from Boston nearly two months ago. I really cannot help but be curious, were you born and raised there? Or lived there for a time?" She asks the latter part of the question shyly.

Elizabeth smiles. "Of course, I do not mind sharing. When one is blessed with something they should share it. There is more joy in that then to horde it all to oneself." She is silent for a few moments of thought though as she turns to look at Lillie. The little empath will feel the panic rising in the blonde. However, she nods her head. "Yes. I was born there and raised there. I have just recently come to see my grandmother and stay with her."

Randy follows and nods agreeingly, "Smells great." He compliments in turn. Letting both ladies get seated and get to the food first. Finding a seat after. "Ah, that can be true. A lot of things are better when shared." Turning to listen to Elizabeth as she explain her origins. Still curious as well, as she is usually reluctant to tell. He does not push her any though. "Well, just means that we are lucky to have you here and taste your food." He offers with a grin.

Ah, the beauty of her ability… it gives Lillie a great big ol' red 'STAHHHHP' button when she knows she hit a nerve. It's handy when people are either guarded in their outward emotions or lying; neither of which Elizabeth can be accused of. As she is leaning forth to pick out a polite serving of the fare, Lillie feels the panic stab her right in the gut. She even inhales sharply, but catches herself… hopes nobody noticed. A soft smile, then. "I understand.. that is most kind of you. And in turn you see fit to share the kindness with the town. Your grandmother is lucky." Lillie says gently, having collected her fare and lowering herself to seat herself at a picnic table.

"What of you, Randy? You're a long way from home, too… New York, from what I can tell?" Lillie asks of the young man next, feeling emboldened and excited to learn more about those present. Hopefully the panic button won't be pressed a second time!

Elizabeth lowers her brows towards Lillie at the inhalation. "Are you alright?" She looks the woman over from top to bottom and bottom to top. Elizabeth is making sure that everyone gets some food. Although, there is a slight about of guilt in serving an Irish type some potato salad. She moves on quickly and smiles towards Randy. "Oh. I'm just one of a great many that share things." She does look towards the man to hear all about him. Not about her.

Randy probably doesn't notice Lillie's reaction. Other than assuming that she noticed Elizabeth's reluctance. Randy for his part just smiles and look between them both. Nodding about where he is from. "Indeed. I'm here trying to find some interesting things. Looking through old tales and folklore." He explains with a smile on his lips still. Raising a brow at the question from Elizabeth to Lillie.

What was that about, anyway? Having truly not expected that, Lillie nonetheless does not pry. Had she not felt that lightning bolt of awareness, mayhaps she would have gone on to ask what neighborhood, what schools.. etcetera. Things that wouldn't have helped the matter. However, Lillie is now deeply concerned. When asked of her well-being Lillie handwaves gently. "Ever get that feeling of one walking over your grave? That sort of chill? It took me by surprise just now and I shivered. All is well," She promises, and goes about enjoying the food. Worried about the potato salad and Lillie? No problem there; the girl shovels it in quite happily. "God above this is divine. I've not had this in a very long time."

To Randy next, Lillie waits until she chews a mouthful of fried chicken before responding accordingly. "Oh! Very intriguing!" She exclaims, though she feels her heart pounding all of a sudden. "We've a decent library.. I've been meaning to go there to look into the town's history a bit."

"Oh, yes Mister Preston was in the library the other day. We met the young woman that worked for the carnival while we were there. I think he said something about the river God?" Elizabeth looks over at Randy in inquisition if she has gotten that right. Then she smiles a bit more warmly. Her eyes slide back towards Lillie. "Do you know of anything weird going on or any sort of folklore?"

Randy ahs, "I think there is something about that. A chill. People associate that will several things. Spectres perhaps." He offers and smiles, along with a small shrug. "Ah, yes. I was in the library yesterday. Was thinking about heading there again at some point to look into the history more as well. The founding families most likely, and see if I can manage to meet up with them all." He explains. Echoing some of what Elizabeth said as well. "Ah, yes. miss Azevedo." As for river God, he nods slowly. "I am not sure if it's a god or not. Only that there is some form of local lore about something that moves along the river. It could be a deity or a demon. Perhaps a phantom." He says and shrugs. "Either way, sound interesting." Smiling as Elizabeth does help out with asking about the folklore. Turning to see if Lillie has anything to offer to Elizabeth's question.

Now this is intriguing stuff. Lillie's eyes widen in genuine amazement, fingers dabbing at her lips with a napkin as she takes it all in. "I cannot say that I've been exploring that side of things.." She trails off. "I'm not above curiosity about it all, that's for sure… I'm afraid that I've nothing to offer but my earnest intrigue around it all. A.. river God?" Blink, she drapes the napkin into her lap. "Miss Azevedo? A local here, you say?" The girl pauses, trying to take all of it in. Going silent as she submits another piece of chicken to a savage chewing, she watches Randy with brilliant eyes.

"A phantom.." She echoes. "Definitely not what I've been following. Basic town history…. but I sure am intrigued to know more! Sounds delightfully chilling…" Lillie trails off. No, her research is for an altogether different reason; something she'd be embarrassed to admit. Folklore is far more tantalizing.

Elizabeth looks up as someone comes up to her. She listens. It's something something grandmother something. Her lips curve up. "It seems I'm needed at home. If one of you could return the basket later." She nods her head. It has been good talking to each of you.

Randy shakes his head about miss Azevado. "Well, she isn't a local. She's from New York as well." He explains Starting to try some of the food as well. Brushing his lips with a napkin. "That tastes great." Nodding a bit as Lillie seem intrigued. "You're free to join me. I was thinking about heading along the trail outside of town." He offers and smiles. Bowing his head. "Will talk to you later. We'll make sure that the basket comes back to your place." Having been ready to close up and offer the basket to Elizabeth until she offered that. Rising to bow to her as she leaves. Glancing to Lillie as well.

Seeing as how she is slowing down, Lillie is clearly full as well. That and she's just too damned polite. Were it her older brother Fred, that horse would have devoured the whole picnic and picked at the wicker for crumbs. But alas, his mild little sister sees to it that her plate is cleaned off, and does not seek anymore. Now there's just that lovely feeling of fullness in her stomach, and somehow that eases other things that are afoot in her mind. "Thank you again for everything, Elizabeth. You will have the basket back very soon, I promise. I hope all is well at home." She says earnestly, looking up at the lovely young lady as she rises to her feet. She does so as well, lifting her hand in farewell.

Once Randy makes his offer, Lillie then smiles upon him just as kindly. "That would be an absolute pleasure. I need to check in at home as well, but perhaps we can make a date of it another day? I would love to join you to see what else you would dig out from the tomes." Lillie says in her singsong way, her lilt strong. She means it.
