Higsby Library

Higsby Library is not a large library by any means, but it has a sufficient amount of books to make any bibliophile happy. After the foyer and the reception area where books are checked out and returned there is a large old fashioned card catalog. Flanking these are the shelves full of books. There is a set of stairs toward the back leading both upstairs and down. Upstairs is a rotunda area containing both books, periodicals and music. Downstairs is dedicated to a children's area.

It's late afternoon, school is out for the day, but the library is relatively empty save a few children down stairs and some regular patrons and of course the staff. Having just arrived, a few books in the crook of her arm, Constance, still dressed for work in the stark white nurse uniform, walks up to the desk to hand the books to the librarian checking in the books that have already been returned for the day. A polite smile, a little on the cool side, is offered to the librarian as the books are taken "You will find that they are due today." no book fines for her! "Are those periodicals still being held for my grandfather?" and the affirmative answer Constance nods then looks around indecision on her face.

Virginia is surprisingly not in the children’s section. Instead she is sitting at a table with several books pulled out in front of her and several newspapers. The teacher seems to be concentrating deeply, although she does glance up every few minutes to look around the room. Seems like a teacher habit.

Indecisive becomes decisive in a heartbeat as Constance sees the school teacher and her study materials. Walking toward where Virginia sits she nods a greeting to another patron in passing, exchanging pleasantries before continuing on "Good afternoon, Miss. Williams." she greets as she pauses by the table where the other woman sits. "I hope you are well."

Virginia looks up and smiles, "Good Afternoon Miss Styne. I am well, thank you for asking. How was the clinic today?" It appears she has all the books she was able to find on the history of the town in front of her.

"It was quiet today. It seems that the cold that was going around has run its course." Constance answers as her eyes scan the books "For now at least. There are bound to be more before the winter is over." she gives a gesture to the books "Are you preparing a lesson for the children about the town?"

Virginia nods in agreement, "There were very few sniffles today in class." she smiles, almost shyly and nods, "I haven't been here long, but yes. Some of the older students are doing reports, and I realized I knew so little, so here I am."

"That is good to hear. Hopefully it will stay that way, at least until Christmas." Constance replies with her own small bit of smile. "Well if the books are not sufficient, I am positive that Mayor Wallace will answer any questions about the town you may have." her own Massachusetts accent marks her as not from around here either, though she isn't anywhere new to the town "I hope you are not finding small town life to dull.

Virginia makes an agreeing noise, "Yes…Perhaps I can ask him to come in and speak to the children…they would like that." She chuckles, "No, not really. It's calm. I like that. I can walk to the school without worry." Well, not too much worry, anyway

"I am sure Mayor Wallace would love that too." Constance tells the Virginia, though isn't quite as convinced about the children liking it, "He loves to talk about history and the town, the two together, he will be thrilled." she nods as she listens her delicate brows arching quizzically "Where did you live that you had to worry about walking about town?"

Virginia's not so sure, but she smiles, "I hope so. Maybe I can do a duel history/government lesson." She chuckles softly, "I have traveled around quiet bit, New York, London." Those two are very different from here! "Do you know if here is to be a gather for the holidays?"

"Isn't London just breathtaking. And New York." Constance has fond memories of both places "Grandfather always took me to his various medical conferences when I was growing up. He blames that for me becoming a nurse." the question has her giving a nod "Oh there are several holiday festivities. There will be town square Christmas tree lighting, there is a parade, the town puts on a pageant and the church does a Christmas play followed by the choir and a group of musicians putting on a concert." she waves a gloved hand gently "Not all on the same day of course."

Virginia nods, "Yes, they are. You are very lucky to have gone, especially with your grandfather." The news of the festivals has the teacher please, "Oh, that will be so pretty, I can

Virginia nods, "Yes, they are. You are very lucky to have gone, especially with your grandfather." The news of the festivals has the teacher please, "Oh, that will be so pretty, I can't wait!" She then adds, a touch mischievously, "Will Miss Higgins make cookies?"

"And good that I did when I was young. With all the turmoil in Europe right now I do not think it would be a safe place for a woman traveling alone." even if a woman traveling alone was even proper. "There will be a group of men from town going out this weekend to find the perfect tree. After it is set up the Ladies Auxiliary with the help of the fire department decorate it." another nod as Constance leans slightly against the table "Do you want to be the one that tells Mrs. Higgins that she can't?" she certainly doesn’t!

Virginia's face crunches slightly at the mention of the war. "No…it is not. It's so very sad, really." Her eyes widen and then her head shakes, "Oh! Heavens no! I was hoping she does, I would like some to give to the class. Not all of the children will get treats this year." She might even be able to get someone to donate oranges!

"My grandfather spent some time overseas during world war two. He has quite a few stories, few of them pleasant to hear. And he was not on the front lines either." not hard to guess what he was doing…being a doctor. "She does. I am sure if you told her you wanted some for your class she would make special ones just for them." that's what she thinks at least.

Virginia nods, "The Great War is not pleasant." On to more pleasant conversations, "Yes, I will ask her. Perhaps she'll even give me a discount!" Maybe. Who knows with Bernice! "I may talk to the Mayor as well, I know some of the children of farmers are coming in with coats that are much too thin…the poor things. Perhaps the town, or the church, can help with a donation."

"Maybe if you go on about the poor children and how some are going to miss out on getting treats." Constance isn't going to say one way or the other if a discount is possible "You could also talk to the Ladies Auxiliary. I know they are always looking for good causes to rattle cans for."

Virginia sighs, "I do hate to beg…perhaps I’ll just spend my salary." like all good teachers. Her pretty pinks lips press together, "Yes…that is a good idea. I have been meaning to start attending…" Places like that are always good for gossip.

"I do not think it will take much in the way of begging. I think Ms. Higgins may have a soft spot for children." most of the elderly women Constance knows does, but Ms. Higgins might be an exception, but doesn't think she would "I have thought about it myself, but the clinic keeps me very busy. I would really like to have another doctor or two to take some of the pressure off Grandfather. He is not getting any younger."

Virginia hopes it doesn't take much! "Oh, come join with me. Surely you can get away for one evening? How often do they meet?" The idea seems to excite Virginia and she smiles widely. "Have you sent a request to any of the universities nearby? they may know of a newly graduated doctor who is looking for a new home."

Constance hmmms, loosening the wrap around her shoulders now that she is starting to warm up some "I think they meet the second and fourth Wednesday of every month. Sometimes more often depending on what they have planned." she isn't committing "I am not sure. Some of the ladies in the auxiliary do not look to favorable on me. They haven't asked me to join at least. I am a yankee and all." there is a shake of her head "I have not. Grandfather has interviewed a few older gentlemen, but none have met his requirements."

Virginia waves a hand, "I have been asked, you can come with me. They just do not know you yet. " Her hands then come together, "Surely your grandfather would wish you to go?" She nods, understanding it is Dr. Styne's choice, not Constance's. "If not the Auxiliary club, then come see movie with me. I have no one to go with."

"Perhaps." Constance has her other ideas of why she hasn't been asked, but its not like she can confront the ladies about it. "My grandfather has only wanted me to be happy. Not being invited hasn't made me unhappy, so I do not know if he has even thought about it. He can be a bit myopic about things." like a lot of men of his generation are. "Oh it has been to long since I have seen a movie. There are supposed to be some good ones coming out soon." if there is anything that Constance loves for entertainment it is a good show.

Virginia will take that as a win! "Yes, I'll get a schedule and we can get a devilishly large popcorn. It will be so much fun!" No one has approached her from the male gender to do such things, so Virginia will make her own date nights! She clasps her hands again, "Oh, I cannot wait." Perhaps she's been a bit more bored here in the small town than she admitted.

Constance is a bit taken aback by Virginia's enthusiasm "It would be lovely to do something with another female." she spends way to much time at the clinic and with her grandparents. And there aren't any men knocking her door down either, mostly due to her grandfather and his early comments about no one in the town being good enough for her. "We will have to go to Elizabethton, they play the new movies there."

Virginia laughs softly, "Oh! New releases! Even better!" They'll make all the men folk jealous and just go without them! "This is really nice." She leans in a bit, "I was beginning to think that this town was full of drips!"

Or jealous of Constance because she is hanging out with Virginia, if asked she doubts it would be the other way around. Either way she wouldn't be bothered by it. "And the theatre here you have to bring your own snacks." which is fine until you see that the person next to you have something that stinks or worse. "You are still used to big city life. The town folk here just have a different idea of fun."

Virginia has the good grace to blush slightly, looking down at her hands, "it's taken more time to get used to than I thought it would." She shifts in her seat, eyes roaming over her gathered books. "It will be a nice distraction from our schedules."

Constance nods in understanding and reaches out a hand to put on Virginia's shoulder "Yes. It took me quite a while to get used to it as well. It is certainly different than Boston." which explains the slight accent she has "You will be getting some time off around Christmas?"

The touch seems to calm Virginia, and she smiles over at Constance, "Yes, the children have their break, almost 3 weeks."

"Three weeks?" Constance seems a bit surprised at that. Not having any children of her own or school age siblings she wasn't aware that they were out that long "That seems excessive. When I was in school we only had a week off the holidays.

Virginia explains, "It is because we are in a rural area. They help with chores and getting things ready for when spring areas." Or something. "it's also so cold, some of those poor dears have to walk to the school."

Constance nods "I certainly did not live in a rural area and attended a private academy." and clearly one that didn't want to give their students to much time off. "Well at least they are not having to walk in the snow. I do not miss that…too much." she chews on her lip a bit "Perhaps I will go with to the Ladies Auxiliary. The children do not need to be catching more colds because of lack of coats." at least it rarely gets cold enough for frost bite.

Virginia smirks at the mention of snow, bout doesn't comment. There's much head bobbing, "Yes! it will be for a good cause. And then we can sit and chat and it will be a lovely evening." See? it all works out!
